SNAKES!!
Taking a line from Indiana Jones “I hate snakes”. I noticed our faithful but
worthless dog, was beating the heat by bathing in the drain waters from
the pond I am trying to clean out. Looks like a good idea, right. Well, hear
the rest of the story so to say. Later in the day I was digging out that area
with the dozer. As I tracked through the cooling water where the dog had
been, five or six water moccasins slithered out. Although I was on the
dozer all I could think about was one or more coming up on the tracks and
that would be too close. I am sure your wondering where the spiritual lesson
is in this story. Other than God’s grace keeping the snakes on the ground,
there is another. We see things going on in this world that seem like it would
be fun and maybe a good idea. You see posters all the time showing folks
having what looks like a great time drinking. You see people doing daring and
dangerous things that look like the thing to do. But you know, it’s sorta like
that dog laying it the water, it looks like a good idea until you see the snakes
crawling out. God bless you. Doug Moreland

SADDLE UP OR CRANK UP?
What are you talking about?? I am sure you are asking. Let me explain. I know
we are getting ready to have some arena events in our new arena. My horses
have not been ridden in a while, so I have been saddling up and checking cows
in the morning. Normally I jump on the four wheeler, crank up and buzz off. I am
sure this is good for the horses and is the cowboy way of doing the job. It does
not work as well. You see ... the cattle know when they hear the four wheeler
there is normally a treat involved (range cubes). There is a gathering at the
vehicle so to speak. This makes it easy to check off the cattle as they are all
around me. They pay no attention to the horses, so I have to look for the cows
to mark them off. Some times I feel that way about going to Church. I know I am
going to get a blessing, so here I come. Maybe it's a good thing to gather up on
Sunday morning so the Lord can bless us without having to look high and low
to find us. Although, really, he knows where we are even if we are not in Church.

THOSE ELECTRIFIED FENCES
I do not like electric fences to start with. However, sometimes they can be useful
on the place. It does not take long before those cattle are trained to avoid that
tiny little shiny wire. I have had to string up some electric fence when I turned
the cows out on the meadow last week. I know you shouldn’t be turning cattle
on the meadow before the 2nd cutting, but you gotta do what you gotta do
sometimes. I had a time getting a connection and getting juice to the entire
fence. I walked the fence and couldn’t find the problem. Finally I found a splice
that was not getting connection. I think sometimes when we seem to be having
a bad day or things are not going as planned, it may be Lord shocking us back
to where we need to be. You would think, like those cattle, after a few of those
shocks of life we would be trained. Oh well, we may not be as trainable as cattle.
I hope, however, I never lose that connection with the Lord. Maybe someday we
will stay where he wants us. God bless you. Doug Moreland

LILLIES (WHAT)
I know things are getting hot and dry around the place. There is a shortage
of hay and the cost is extremely high when you find it. With only one
cutting of hay this year we have to pinch out this valuable stuff. I think my
cattle are trying to tell me that they are tired of the Jenny Craig diet. I put
out a round bale the other day and after they ravaged it I noticed they were
taking a dip in the lake. This dip, I presumed, was to cool off a little, but
when I noticed them eating the Lillie pads I knew they have not gotten the
full meal deal they wanted. Well, I guess I’ll pick up some of that gold
(Alfalfa hay) coming down from the north. I am sure it will be a treat to
those bovines of mine. Sometimes it’s really hard to understand God’s
timing. I know he knows we need rain, even with out me constantly tell him
and asking for it. But he has always come through. Maybe we are being
schooled a little to bring us to the understanding that every thing we do or
have depends on him. Maybe we get to thinking we are in charge until we
find we can do nothing with out his blessings. God bless you.

I guess this will be a day we will all remember. Unlike any other day since Pearl
Harbor, we were attacked by an enemy most of us were not really
aware of. Many regular people, just like us, lost their lives for this
senseless cause. I can’t help but remember those who serve as firefighters and
paramedics running into danger when running out seemed the thing to do.
That, my friends, is what you call bravery in the face of danger. Sometimes I
wonder if we, as Americans, would now fight for the right to remain
free. Would we fight for the right to serve “Our God” as we see fit? Isn’t
this right and freedom alone enough to fight for? Believe me, those who flew
those planes into our building believed strongly enough in “their God” to give
their lives to kill and destroy our way of life. What are we putting into our faith?
Is it real to us? Is attending a church service every now and then fulfilling our
faith in the Lord Jesus Christ? Are we willing to fight? I am reassured when
I see our soldiers leaving to fight and returning with honor from this war.
Yes, it is worth fighting for. May the one true God bless you. Doug Moreland
